Advanced Electrocautery Frequently Asked Questions

advance electrolysis electrocautery cheshire

What is Advanced Electrocautery?

Electrocautery, also known as diathermy, uses electrical energy to create heat at the tip of a small needle, which enables the precise removal of skin lesions.

What does the procedure involve?

Although slight local discomfort is felt during the heat application, it does not usually require a local anaesthetic. The procedure often lasts a matter of seconds; however, this depends on the type of skin lesion, its thickness and size. For lesions that take longer to treat, topical anaesthetic or local anaesthetic injection can be used.

How does the skin appear after Electrocautery?

The area at the base of the lesion will appear dark or black initially & slightly tender to the touch, and the area around it will usually be red and slightly swollen.

Over the following days, a crust or scab usually forms as the area dries out and this will then slough off over the next week.

It’s essential not to pick at any scabs to prevent scarring. Usually, the treatment area will return to normal after a few weeks, although scarring and discolouration is possible. This includes hypo or hyperpigmentation (skin becoming lighter or darker).

Depending on the nature of the lesion, more than one treatment may be necessary and this is usually repeated at regular intervals if required.

Possible side effects shortly after treatment:

Pain –

Diathermy is usually well-tolerated but can sometimes be uncomfortable during or after treatment.

Using your aftercare cooling gel will help to make the area feel less uncomfortable after treatment. Apply with a damp, clean cotton wool pad (pads & gel can be kept in the fridge to aid cooling).

Swelling, skin sensitivity and redness –

This is a normal immediate response to heating the skin & may last for 48 hours, depending on the lesion treated. For a short while the area may also ooze a watery fluid, which will then crust & dry.

Crusting or scabbing – this is also a common consequence of treatment and any crusting or scabbing will usually resolve over the next week. Itching may occur as the skin heals.

Infection –

Infection can occur, but this is uncommon. If it does occur, the discomfort usually increases, and the area may develop a discharge.  This will require treatment in the form of a topical antiseptic or antibiotic therapy.
If this occurs, it’s essential to let your Practitioner know as soon as possible so you can start treatment before it worsens.

Subsequent side effects:

Scarring –

Sometimes, the treated area may leave a small scar, which will fade over time.

Pigmentation changes –

The skin around the treatment site may lighten or darken in colour. This can occur in anyone but is much more common in people with darker skin tones. This usually improves with time but may be permanent.

Results are not always permanent –

This is more likely for some thread veins, which may refill over time and require further treatment.
Warts & skin tags can also reoccur, especially if you are susceptible to them.

Which Lesions Can Electrocautery Treat

Electrocautery/ Diathermy is excellent for treating skin tags, milia, sebaceous hyperplasia, seborrhoeic keratosis, some cysts and facial telangiectasia.

Aftercare following Electrocautery

It is important not to pick at the scab as this will encourage scarring.

A dressing or plaster is not usually necessary but may be advisable if the treated area is likely to be knocked or rubbed by clothing.

  • Avoid all perfumed products in the area until the skin has healed.
  • Avoid make-up/body lotion until the area is healed.
  • Use gentle soaps/cleansers & pat dry.
  • void flying for 48 hours following vascular treatment.
  • Salt water bathing will help if the skin feels irritated.
  • Avoid UV light directly on the area until it has healed. Consider covering the area or using a broad-spectrum sun cream with SPF50.
  • Avoid activities stimulating blood flow, e.g very hot baths/ showers, moderate exercise, hot/spicy foods, alcohol, saunas/steam rooms, and
  • Try to keep the area as dry as possible.
  • Avoid rubbing or irritation of the area.
  • Avoid facial treatments and waxing until the area has completely healed.

ZO Stimulator Peels

zo skin health stimulator peel

ZO Stimulator Peel was created by Dr Zein Obagi MD – The Red Carpet Peel

ZO Stimulator Peel is gentle on the skin but strong enough to make a visible difference, brightening and refreshing the face for a youthful, dewy look. This peel is known in the USA as the ‘Red Carpet Peel’ owing to the number of celebrities that have the Peel before they have to look picture perfect for red carpet events and can’t afford to hide away with the redness of flaking that some strong peels cause.

The ZO Skin Health Stimulator Peel includes a combination of three different acids plus potent concentrations of other active ingredients to exfoliate the skin, stimulate the growth of collagen and elastin and reduce wrinkles. As a result, the ZO Stimulator Peel is a highly effective way to treat signs of ageing, discolouration and UV damage.

What is ZO Stimulator Peel?

This peel comprises a combination of lactic, citric and salicylic acids plus potent concentrations of other active ingredients to exfoliate the skin, stimulate the growth of collagen and elastin and reduce lines, wrinkles and other blemishes.

What happens during the ZO Stimulator Peel?

Your skin will be cleansed using the appropriate cleanser from the ZO range to remove any makeup or oil. This is followed by ZO Exfoliating Polish and Polish Activator and ZO Peel Prep Solution to prepare the skin for the Peel.

The Stimulator Peel is then applied and left on for two to four minutes before it is neutralised with pads soaked in Peel Neutraliser, which restores the skin’s Ph balance after the acids in the peel. The appropriate products are applied if you have a Brightening or Hydrating Medical Peel. The final step is using ZO Daily Power Defence moisturising serum and ZO Ommerse Renewal Cream to hydrate and protect your skin.

The active Peel solution causes the superficial layer of the skin to peel off and may cause slight initial reddening. However, the treatment exposes a new layer of healthy, undamaged skin, resulting in a smoother texture and even skin tone.

What are the benefits of the ZO Stimulator Peel?

  • Soften and rejuvenate sun-damaged skin.
  • Improves skin texture and tone.
  • Reduce or eliminate age spots, freckles and hyperpigmentation.
  • Soften fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Stimulate the production of collagen for firmer, more youthful skin.
  • Stimulate the growth of healthy cells while you shed damaged skin.
  • Reduces the appearance of melasma.
  • Treats mild acne and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
  • Reduces pore size.
  • Improves the efficacy of skincare products.
  • No downtime.
  • Immediate results.

Who should (and should not) have the ZO Stimulator Peel?

This peel is recommended for adults concerned with skin ageing, sun damage and hyperpigmentation or anyone wishing to have a rejuvenating boost to the skin.

We do not recommend the peel for those who are:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Using Roaccutane or prescription retinoids
  • Having radiation or chemotherapy
  • Allergic to lactic acid, citric acid, salicylic acid or latex

Do I need to prepare my skin before the peel?

You do not need to perform any preparation or use any specific skin care before the ZO Stimulator Peel. However, you will get better results if you use some ZO products before the treatment.

How long does the treatment take?

The treatment will take about 45 minutes.

You will notice results immediately, and skin will be fresher, glowing and with an improved texture and tone. We recommend a course of treatments for optimum results.

Is the ZO Stimulator Peel Painful?

Unlike stronger chemical peels during which you may feel discomfort, the Stimulator Peel is not painful and involves no downtime. You may experience a mild warming sensation briefly whilst the peel is applied. There may be slight initial reddening of the skin, followed by limited peeling a day or two later. For special events, the Peel is ideal to have three days before.

How long before I see results?

Most people will see a dramatic improvement in their skin after just one peel. However, we recommend a course of 3 to 4 Peels, 4-6 weeks apart, for maximum benefit.

Maintenance

Ideally, every four months or before special events.

Enhance the results of your ZO Stimulator Peel.

An additional ZO Mask can be added to your Stimulator Peel to enhance the results for your skin. If you opt for one of these, your treatment time will be 10 minutes longer :

ZO Hydra Mask

Other ZO Hydra massage gel and mask ingredients make this ideal for dry, dehydrated or weak skin.

ZO Brightening Mask

A ZO Brightening mask and a brightening massage cream make this ideal for sun-damaged skin with age spots and pigmentation.

ZO Complexion Clearing Masque

Containing eucalyptus and kaolin for antiseptic and detoxifying benefits.

General Foot Care

Hard skin, corns and callus mainly build up over high-pressure areas on the feet. Samantha can skillfully treat these areas using a scalpel blade to remove the hardened skin. Hence this provides comfort and improves overall appearance.

Samantha will offer tailored advice on preventing a reoccurrence of your problem and on the use of in-shoe appliances/ cushioning devices to help.

Treatment for thickened, ingrown and fungal nails

Samantha can thin down thickened nails so they feel more comfortable and also improve their appearance.

She can cut back ingrown nails to make them feel more comfortable and also give you advice about nail surgery which can provide a more permanent solution.

Fungal nails are often unsightly and can become uncomfortable if the nail plate becomes thickened. Samantha can thin down the affected nails and give advice about the use of antifungal preparations.

To confirm if you have a fungal nail infection or there is another cause for your toenail problems, Samantha can perform 5-minute fungal nail testing.

She is also trained in Lacunar fungal nail treatment if you decide to try this treatment option.

Cracked heels

Hard skin can build up around the heel area and can then start to crack. As well as being unsightly these cracks can become very deep, causing bleeding and pain.

Samantha can skillfully treat these areas using a scalpel blade to remove the hardened skin. She can also recommend specialist creams and treatments that can improve the overall condition of the skin and prevent recurrence.

Verrucae

Verrucae are warts that can be found anywhere on the foot. They are harmless but can become painful if they develop on weight-bearing areas. There is evidence to suggest that most verrucae will eventually disappear of their own accord within 2 years.

A verruca can be made to feel more comfortable by reducing overlying hard skin and advice can be given on the correct use of home treatments.

Alternatively, podiatrists can use stronger acid-based treatments – these are higher in strength than over the counter preparations and are applied to the skin at weekly intervals.

Foot ulcers and wounds

There are many factors that prevent foot ulcers and wounds from healing. These include pressure and friction to the area, poor circulation and general health problems.

After a thorough assessment, a podiatrist can identify these influencing factors and develop a suitable treatment regime. Treatment may involve the use of specialist dressings, padding and footwear advice.

Cryotherapy

What is Cryotherapy?

The term ‘cryotherapy’ literally means ‘treatment using low temperature’.  The treatment removes / treats skin lesions by freezing them.

What conditions can be treated with cryotherapy?

A wide variety of superficial benign (non-cancerous) lesions can be treated with cryotherapy. It is most commonly used to remove skin tags, viral warts, seborrhoeic keratosis and other benign lesions.

What does the procedure involve?

Cryotherapy can be performed in clinic without any special preparation

At Cheshire Lasers Moira of Jouvence Aesthetics performs cryotherapy using Hydrozid, a canister that sprays the skin lesion & reaches a temperature of -103 degrees.

hydroid cryotherapy Cheshire

Although there is slight local pain felt, cryotherapy does not normally require a local or topical anaesthetic and the procedure itself lasts a matter of seconds; the precise time depending on the thickness and size of the lesion. The frozen skin becomes white and takes one to two minutes to thaw to normal skin temperature. The process is repeated once the skin has thawed out, up to 6 cycles.
Over the succeeding few days, a scab will form, and this will take one to two weeks (and occasionally a little longer) to fall off. Usually, the treated area will eventually look normal, although scarring and discolouration is possible, depending on your skin type & healing abilities.

hydroid cryotherapy Cheshire

How many treatments do I need?

This depends on the nature of the lesion, and its size. More than one treatment maybe necessary, if so we recommend a repeat treatment after 2-3 weeks.

How should I care for the treated area?

You will be given information on how to care for the area. Try to keep areas dry & not knock any scabs. It is important not to pick at the scab as this will encourage scarring. We do not recommend a dressing or plaster unless the treated area is likely to be knocked or rubbed by clothing.

What are the side effects of Cryotherapy?

Immediate common side effects include:

Pain

Cryotherapy is usually well-tolerated, but can sometimes be painful if a deep freeze has been necessary.
This discomfort can occur both at the time of treatment and for a variable time thereafter. Painkillers (such as paracetamol) taken for the first 24 hours may relieve that discomfort; also taking a painkiller an hour or so prior to anticipated treatment can reduce the discomfort.

Swelling and Redness

This is a normal immediate response to freezing the skin, and usually settles after two to three days. For a short while the treated area may ooze a little watery fluid. Cryotherapy close to the eyes may induce prominent puffiness of the eyelids which settles within days

Blistering

Blistering can be a consequence of cryotherapy and blisters settle after a few days as the scab forms. Some people blister more easily than others and the development of blisters does not mean that the skin has been frozen too much. Occasionally the blisters may become filled with blood; this is harmless and only if a blister was very uncomfortable would it be necessary to puncture it, using a sterile needle in clinic.

Rare Less common subsequent side effects include:

Infection

Infection is uncommonly, infection can occur, resulting in increased pain and the formation of pus: this may require topical antiseptic or antibiotic therapy.

Scarring

Rarely, a scar will form, especially if a deep freeze has been necessary & depending on skin type.

Pigmentation changes

The skin at and around the treatment site may lighten or darken in colour, especially in dark-skinned people. This usually improves with time, but may be permanent, depending on your skin.

Numbness

Numbness can occur if a superficial nerve is frozen. In which case numbness of the area of skin the nerve supplies can occur. Normal feeling usually returns within a matter of months. Treatment may not be effective, or the condition may recur, particularly skin warts.

Dr Priyanka’s treatment plan usually includes a combination of the following treatments:

1) A diet plan together with supplements

Dr Priyanka inject it into the layers of the skin where cell repair and growth occur. Treatment is primarily carried out on the top of the head and only works if the hair bulbs are still alive.

The first results usually are visible after three or four treatments. Initially, patients may see less hair loss, then after around two months, new hair appears. Initially small or weak, by the next month they will be stronger and thicker with good volume.

3)PRP Dracula Therapy

PRP Therapy is a very natural, modern method of choice for quality hair restoration. It is a safe non-surgical procedure with significant results. It is an injectable treatment, which uses the patient’s plasma containing active growth factors to promote hair growth. These growth factors may help hair grow, or at a minimum, slow down hair loss. The result leaves the patient with fuller healthier looking hair.

The number of treatments you need depends on your hair condition.  Dr Priyanka will discusss this after assessing you during a consultation. Generally, the number of treatments will be four to six treatments at four week intervals. You will see significant hair growth beginning at six months and continuing thereafter. Determining factors are the amount and cause of hair loss.

Overall, patient satisfaction is high, with this treatment receiving an average rating of seven out of 10. Usually, you will need maintenance treatments every six to 12 months to maintain the hair restoration progress.
