Restylane Vital Skin Boosters counter the effects of sun damage and provide deep dermal hydration. They improve skin elasticity, making the skin look hydrated and feel smooth to the touch. It is perfect for difficult-to-treat areas, such as the backs of hands or décolletage, as well as the face.

What does a Restylane Vital Skin Booster Treatment involve?

An initial, intense treatment of Restylane Vital usually comprises three sessions, 3-4 weeks apart.

The treatment involves a series of very fine micro-injections or a cannula to spread the product under the skin evenly.

There are no restrictions on how often you can receive a Restylane Vital treatment. You can repeat as often as you feel is necessary.

Typically, most people need a maintenance treatment every 4-6 months.

Skin Booster Pre-Treatment Advice

    • Pregnancy and breastfeeding are contra-indications to treatment.
    • Alcohol intake should be reduced at least 24 hours before treatment.
    • Medication such as aspirin may cause bruising, as will high doses of Vitamin E.
    • Sunbeds, waxing, electrolysis and laser should be avoided at least 48 hours before treatment.
    • Pain sensitivity may be heightened at certain times (pre-menstrual or following excessive alcohol intake).

Questions and answers for using complementary therapies for cancer patients:

How does using complementary therapies benefit cancer patients?

Diagnosis and subsequent treatment can bring on many emotions and symptoms including stress, mild to moderate depression, fear, worry and anxiety-induced nausea.

Tara’s experience has found that by combining a range of specific therapies, her patients feel a marked improvement in some of their symptoms and generally feel calmer.  She often uses a combination of therapies including Reiki and Reflexology as well as advising on relaxation techniques to use at home.

Tara also has experience in treating family members and carers, acknowledging the impact cancer has not just on the patient but the whole family.

Is there scientific research into using complementary therapies for cancer patients?

Reflexology cannot cure cancer. However, it may help with some of the side effects of chemotherapy, i.e. neuropathy, sickness, insomnia, pain etc. There is ongoing but limited research, however, some studies have looked at using Reflexology to help with symptoms such as pain, sickness and anxiety with evidence showing that patients relax which enables them to cope with stress and anxiety and can lift their mood. The Christie Hospital runs specific courses in therapies for cancer care, recognising and promoting the benefits of complementary therapies, which Tara has attended.

Will the therapy interact with my medication?

A full medical consultation where a list of all medications is taken before your first therapy. Tara will then advise accordingly and offer a treatment plan which will be closely monitored and amended as required.

Are there any side effects of having complementary therapy with cancer?

Reflexology for cancer patients is very gentle, it is not as in-depth as a therapy would be on a person who does not have cancer, therefore most patients will feel more relaxed afterwards and some of the symptoms and side effects may also subside. As Tara will do a full initial medical consultation, followed by a short discussion before every subsequent treatment, she will be able to monitor and adjust her therapy accordingly. You will also be given aftercare advice at the end of your therapy.

How many treatments will I need?

This varies from patient to patient. Initially, a course of 4 to 6 treatments, approximately once a week.  Most people continue with treatment every 4-6 weeks for maintenance.

Is it common for cancer patients to use complementary therapies?

In the UK, up to one-third of people with cancer (33%) use complementary therapy at some time during their illness. For some types of cancer, such as breast cancer, this number is even higher at almost half (50%).

There is no evidence to suggest that any type of complementary therapy prevents or cures cancer. However, people are still using complementary therapies for many reasons.

People often have complementary therapies to help them feel better. The therapies can help them cope with the effects of the cancer and also the effects of the treatments. How you feel plays a part in how you cope.

Many complementary therapies concentrate on relaxation and reducing stress. They might help to calm your emotions, relieve anxiety, and increase your general sense of health and well being.

What are Marionette Lines?

Marionette lines are creases that form from the corners of your mouth down towards either side of your chin. People often complain that they make them look sad, as the mouth turns down at the corners. They get their name as they resemble the appearance of marionette string puppets.

Why am I Getting Marionette Lines?

Marionette lines have multiple causes. They appear with advancing age due to volume loss in the face’s underlying structures. The commonest structures are bone and fat. As the face loses volume, gravity pulls the overlying skin down, and Marionette lines can start forming.

A contributing factor may also be the increasing strength of the muscles at the corners of the mouth, which pull the angle of the mouth down. Marionette lines develop more quickly due to lifestyle factors that reduce the skin’s collagen production, such as smoking and excess sun.

Are Marionette Lines Hereditary/Genetic?

You may have a genetic predisposition to developing marionette lines due to your underlying facial shape and the amount of volume loss you develop due to age. But as stated above, other factors also have an influence. Therefore, it is important to maintain the skin’s collagen levels by taking care of your skin, avoiding smoking and using sunscreen daily.

Will Marionette Lines Improve with Weight Loss?

Not usually; in fact, weight loss is usually a contributing factor in developing marionette lines. Weight loss can lead to volume loss in the face which then causes the soft tissues and skin to descend, causing the lines to look worse.

However, you may find that if you have gained a lot of weight recently, the distribution of fat around the face, particularly the jowl and neck area, may add to the gravitational pull of the lower face, making the Marionette lines more evident. In this case, weight loss may improve them.

Can Marionette Lines be Corrected/Treated/ Improved?

There are many ways to improve these lines, depending on the underlying cause and severity.

The area’s anatomy is complex, and treatment of this area will require a consultation first to assess the cause of your problem and give you a bespoke treatment plan.

How do Collagen Induction Therapies Improve the Lines?

Collagen induction therapies such as skin boosters, polynucleotides, microneedling, chemical peels and radiofrequency microneedling can help tighten the skin and improve skin quality. Do you suffer from embarrassing excessive sweating?

Hyperhydrosis, also spelt Hyperhidrosis, is the medical term for excessive sweating.

In 2004, the FDA (U.S. Food & Drug Administration) approved BOTOX (Botulinum Toxin Type A) for the treatment of severe primary axillary Hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating of the underarms) in patients unable to obtain relief using antiperspirants.

BOTOX is the most studied brand of Botulinum Toxin in the world. It can treat a wide range of conditions, including spasticity and movement disorders. Botox has FDA approval in the United States for the treatment of excessive sweating.

Local injections of Botulinum Toxin alleviate the symptoms of Hyperhydrosis.

Research has shown that treating the armpits, hands, feet, and face with Botulinum Toxin is safe and effective.

In one clinical study involving 322 patients with severe underarm sweating, 81% of the patients receiving Botulinum Toxin injections achieved a greater than 50% reduction in sweating. 50% of the patients had their excessive sweating relieved for at least 201 days (nearly 7 months).

How does Botox stop Hyperhydrosis?

Botulinum Toxin is a natural, purified protein with the ability to temporarily block the secretion of the chemical in the nervous system that is responsible for “turning on” the body’s sweat glands. By blocking or interrupting this chemical messenger, Botulinum Toxin “turns off” sweating at the area where it has been injected.

What does a Hyperhydrosis treatment involve?

Your doctor or prescribing nurse will first identify the area of excessive sweating and the location of the sweat glands.

They will then inject small amounts of Botulinum Toxin with a very fine needle just under the skin in the area. Multiple injections 1 to 2 cm apart are needed to treat one area.

How long does Botox for Hyperhydrosis last?

Botulinum Toxin injections do not cure Hyperhidrosis; your symptoms will return gradually. You will need to repeat the treatment to maintain dryness. These repeat injections may be necessary at intervals varying from 7-16 months.

I recently had a number of SMP treatment sessions at Cheshire lasers. Botox Treatment for Migraine

BOTOX® is licensed for the treatment of chronic migraine. You are considered to have chronic migraine if you have experienced 15 headaches per month over a three month period, of which at least eight days have migraine features, including; nausea, light or noise sensitivity, pulsating or lateralised pain and lasting hours or more in duration.

How does Botox work for migraines?

It is thought that Botulinum Toxin (Botox) gets into the small nerves that carry pain from the head to the brain, known as C-fibres. This reduces the amount of chemicals released from the nerve ending and therefore interrupts the feedback pathway that perpetuates migraine and headache.

How is Botox given for migraine?

BOTOX ® is given as a series of 31 to 39 tiny injections under the skin or into the muscles in and around the head, the forehead, above the ears, and into the neck and shoulders. The injections are repeated every 12 weeks until the patient no longer has chronic migraine, or until it is clear that treatment is not working.

How effective is Botox for migraine?

The goal is not to become completely free of headache or migraine, but to improve quality of life and to convert migraine from chronic to episodic. Studies show that 47% of patients had a 50% or greater reduction in the number of days with headache.

Response is usually seen after the first or second set of injections. One in four people respond well to the first or second set of injections, and half need more than two sets of injections to get a good response.

The biological effect of Botox on nerves takes several days or a few weeks to work. You should not expect chronic migraine to improve properly in less than 4 weeks. Some patients do not start to improve until after their second set of injections which is given 12 weeks after the first set of injections.
Around 1 in 4 patients do not respond to the injections at all and only 1 in 10 people respond to a third set of injections if the first two sets of injections fail.

Who can’t have Botox for migraine?

  • Botox is only for chronic migraine, not any other sort of migraine.
  • People who are pregnant or breastfeeding are unable to have Botox.
  • If you have neurological disease, for example Bell’s palsy, a neuropathy, or Myasthenia Gravis, the risks of Botox are increased.
  • If you have recently (within the last 3 months) had cosmetic Botox then the side effects could be increased.

Tell your Practitioner if you:

  • You react to injections (eg. fainting) in the past.
  • Experienced problems with previous Botox injections.
  • Have inflammation, weakness or wasting of the muscles/skin where your doctor plans to inject.
  • Have had problems with swallowing or if food/liquid has accidentally gone into your lungs, especially if you will be treated for persistent muscle spasms in the neck and shoulders.
  • Suffer from any other muscle problems or chronic diseases affecting your muscles.
  • Suffer from certain diseases affecting your nervous system.
  • Have closed-angle glaucoma or are at risk of developing this type of glaucoma.
  • Have had any surgery that may have changed the muscle that is being injected.
  • Are due to have an operation soon.
  • Are taking any blood thinning medicine.

What are the side effects from using Botox for migraine?

  • The injections are slightly prickly or stingy and take about five minutes to complete.
  • It is possible, though rare, to have an acute allergic response so you should stay in the clinic for several minutes after the first set of injections.

Less than 1 in 10 patients experience each of the following side effects:

  • Worsening migraine. This can begin within a day or two of the injections, usually lasts a small number of days. You can treat with your usual pain killers.
  • Rash, itching
  • As with all injections; pain, bruising, bleeding or infection at the injection site are a possibility.
  • Drooping of eyebrows or eye lids. This begins after a couple or a few weeks and can last for a small number of weeks.
  • Muscle weakness, pain, cramp, stiffness or tightness.
  • Weakness and pain in the neck. This begins after a couple or a few weeks and can last for a small number of weeks. It can be treated with regular anti-inflammatory tablets.

Less than 1 in 100 may experience:

  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Skin pain
  • Jaw pain
  • Swollen eyelid

Can migraine be treated with regular Aesthetic Botox?

It is now recognised that patients can achieve migraine and headache improvement from treating the frown and the forehead using Aesthetic Botox. This involves fewer injections and fewer units of Botox and is therefore a lower price; however, depending on the migraine, it may not be effective, and it is not a licensed treatment for migraine.

How can you get Botox treatment for chronic migraine?

A full Allergan Botox treatment, as licensed and recommended by NICE, involves injecting 155 units over 31 sites. This treatment is most often performed by neurologists in NHS or private hospitals. Some Aesthetic Doctors and nurses also perform this treatment in CQC-registered clinics.
