Wart Removal

Dr Kathryn Hazlehurst and Dr Kyra Drinnan perform Wart Removal at Cheshire Lasers.

What are Warts?

Warts are small, rough lumps that often develop on the skin. They are common on the hands and feet but can occur anywhere on the skin.

Warts vary in appearance depending on where they are on the body and how thick the skin is. They can develop in isolation or in clusters and are non-cancerous.

Some warts are more likely to affect particular areas of the body. For example, verrucas are warts that usually develop on the soles of the feet.

Most people will have warts at some point in their life. They tend to affect children and teenagers more than adults.

What causes Warts?

Warts are caused by an infection with the human papilloma virus (HPV). HPV is a family of viruses that affect the skin and moist membranes (mucosa) that line the body.

The virus is present in the skin cells of a wart. It causes an excess amount of keratin, a hard protein, to develop in the top skin layer. The extra keratin produces the rough, hard texture of a wart.

There are more than 100 different strains of HPV. Different strains are responsible for different types of warts.

Spreading the Virus

HPV is passed through close skin-to-skin contact. It can also be transmitted by indirect contact – for example, from contaminated objects, such as towels, shoes, areas surrounding swimming pools, or surfaces and floors of communal changing areas.

Warts can be contagious for as long as they are present on your body. The virus is more likely to spread if the skin is wet, soft or has been in contact with a rough surface.

Warts can also be spread to other parts of your own body. You can spread the virus if you:

  • scratch, knock or bite a wart
  • bite your nails or suck your fingers (if they have warts on them)
  • shave your face or legs

This can cause the wart to break up and bleed, making it easier for the virus to spread. You are particularly vulnerable if you have scratches or cuts on the soles of your feet.

Are Warts Contagious?

Warts are very contagious, and close skin-to-skin contact can pass on the infection.

The infection can also be transmitted indirectly from contaminated objects or surfaces, such as the area surrounding a swimming pool.

After becoming infected, it can take weeks or even months for a wart or verruca to appear.

Treating Warts

Most warts are harmless and clear up without treatment. The length of time it takes a wart to disappear will vary from person to person. It may take up to two years for the viral infection to leave your system and for the wart to disappear.

You might decide to treat your wart if it is painful, or in an area that is causing discomfort or embarrassment.

Common methods of treatment include:

Surgery is not usually recommended for warts.

Treatments for warts are not completely effective because they only remove the wart and not the HPV infection. Warts will often return following treatment due to the virus still being present.

The wart will only fully go when the infected person’s immune system realises it is being invaded by the HPV strain and produces antibodies against that particular strain.

Treating Warts with Cryotherapy

At Cheshire Lasers, our doctors usually use cryotherapy for wart and verrucae removal.

Cryotherapy is a quick, effective way of improving the cosmetic appearance of warts. During cryotherapy, an ice-cold gas is sprayed onto your wart to freeze and destroy the affected skin cells. After treatment, a blister may form, followed by a scab; the skin treated generally falls off 7-10 days later.

Cryotherapy usually takes a few minutes, and it can be painful for a few seconds. A freezing cold gas is sprayed directly onto the wart for 2 or 3 cycles during each treatment session.

Large warts sometimes need to be frozen several times, 2 to 3 weeks apart, before they improve.

Cryotherapy may be used for most areas of the body, including the face.

We do not recommend Cryotherapy to treat young children because they may find the treatment too painful. It may also be difficult for them to stay in the same position while having the treatment. Dr Drinnan, however, can treat children over 5 if they can tolerate the treatment.

Possible side effects of cryotherapy include:

  • pain and blistering
  • your skin may become darker (hyperpigmentation) or lighter (hypopigmentation), particularly if you have black skin
  • your nails may change in shape or structure if cryotherapy is used to treat warts under the nails

Prices for Wart Removal

Wart removal at Cheshire Lasers starts from £100. The cost depends on the size of the wart and how many are treated at the same appointment.

Dr Kathryn Hazlehurst and Dr Kyra Drinnan perform most wart removal treatments using cryotherapy at Cheshire Lasers. Sometimes they use electrocautery to cauterise the lesion using a fine electrical cutting tip.

Dr Hazlehurst’s consultation is £50, which is taken off the price of your first treatment, and she can carry out skin lesion removal during the consultation. She treats adults aged 18 and over. Dr Drinnan also treats warts for children aged 5 and over.

Each doctor sets their own prices, so please check the relevant price list before booking:

Juvederm

juvederm ultra Vycross Cheshire

Juvéderm was first launched in the UK in 2001.
It contains cross-linked hyaluronic acid similar to the body’s own natural collagen.
It is non-animal in origin and does not require a patch test.
The gel plumps out skin, filling lines and deeper folds. It is a safe treatment available in different formulations.

Juvederm Ultra

Juvederm Ultra was launched in 2008, combining local anaesthetic in the products for improved comfort. This is a wonderful product for smokers lines and subtle lip enhancements if you do not want to have a dental block for pain relief.

Dr Johnson has used this filler since 2008 at her clinic, Cheshire Lasers. She has seen how this filler can last up to a year, if not longer. How long it lasts depends on the area it is used and also on the metabolism of the individual.

  • Juvederm Ultra 2
For forehead wrinkles and moderate furrows, e.g. glabella lines and mild nasal furrows and lips.
  • Juvederm Ultra 3
For folds, moderate nasolabial furrows and lips, e.g. nasolabial folds, marionette folds, and adding volume to the lips.
  • Juvederm Ultra 4
For deeper folds, facial contouring, cheek and chin enhancements.
  • Juvederm Ultra Smile
    For lips.

Juvéderm’s Vycross Range

Juvéderm’s Vycross Collection were the first hyaluronic acid gel filler to be clinically proven to remain in the body for up to, and above, a year. They all contain 0.3% lidocaine (lignocaine) to improve comfort while they are being injected.

Voluma was introduced to the UK in 2009, Volift and Volbella in 2013 and Volite in 2017.

Volbella for lip rejuvenation and tear trough rejuvenation.

Volift for use in treating deep wrinkles and skin depressions, to improve the contouring to the face and lips, and to restore lost volume.

Juvederm Voluma –  A great product for replacing volume loss from the cheeks and upper face, as well as the jawline. Voluma lasts a year or more in most individuals.

Dr Teri Johnson uses the Juvederm range at Cheshire Lasers for a lot of her lip treatments, for the 8-point lift and some facial contouring.

Restylane Vital Skin Boosters

restylane Cheshire dermal filler skinbooster

Restylane Vital Skin Boosters counter the effects of sun damage and provide deep dermal hydration. They improve skin elasticity, making the skin look hydrated and feel smooth to the touch. It is perfect for difficult-to-treat areas, such as the backs of hands or décolletage, as well as the face.

They contain hyaluronic acid which provides deep dermal hydration and moisturising from within to improve skin tone and health. Restylane Vital Skin Boosters diminish the fine crepey lines caused by sun damage and skin ageing. They smooth the skin to give a plump and hydrated look.

Restylane Vital Skin Boosters are part of a larger Restylane range of products. They have been around for decades, and have FDA approval.

Find out more about the Restylane range here.

What does a Restylane Vital Skin Booster Treatment involve?

An initial, intense treatment of Restylane Vital usually comprises three sessions, 3-4 weeks apart.

The treatment involves a series of very fine micro-injections or a cannula to spread the product under the skin evenly.

There are no restrictions on how often you can receive a Restylane Vital treatment. You can repeat as often as you feel is necessary.

Typically, most people need a maintenance treatment every 4-6 months.

Why not view the Restylane website to see before and after pictures.

Skin Booster Pre-Treatment Advice

    • Pregnancy and breastfeeding are contra-indications to treatment.
    • Alcohol intake should be reduced at least 24 hours before treatment.
    • Medication such as aspirin may cause bruising, as will high doses of Vitamin E.
    • Sunbeds, waxing, electrolysis and laser should be avoided at least 48 hours before treatment.
    • Pain sensitivity may be heightened at certain times (pre-menstrual or following excessive alcohol intake).

We recommend you follow Dr Johnson’s dermal Filler pre and post-treatment advice, which you can find in more detail here.

Under Eye Injectable Treatments

skin booster Nucleofill sunekos Cheshire

The following treatments all stimulate collagen in the skin to improve skin texture and elasticity; they can also improve dark circles and hollows.

Juvelook

Juvelook is a hybrid injectable biostimulator treatment. It was launched in the UK in August 2024.

Juvelook combines:

  • Non-cross-linked Hyaluronic Acid (HA) for immediate hydration and subtle filling.
  • Poly D,L-Lactic Acid (PDLLA) microspheres, which stimulate your skin’s own collagen production over time.

It is the only injectable biostimulator treatment available for use in the delicate areas, such as the under-eye (tear trough) zone, in the UK

Juvelook can help improve:

  • Mild under-eye hollows/tear troughs
  • Fine lines, crepey skin with texture irregularities
  • Skin laxity

How Juvelook works:

The HA (non-cross-linked) provides instant hydration and a smooth appearance to the skin.

Over the next few weeks, the PDLLA encourages fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastic fibres, improving skin firmness and texture.

A course of  1-3 treatments every 4-8 weeks to achieve optimal results. The results can last around 9- 12 months, depending on the number of sessions. With maintenance, the results last longer.

Juvelook treatments are performed by:

Polynucleotide Treatments

Polynucleotide treatments ( PN) are one of the most popular under-eye injectable treatments available in the UK. They have been around since 2021 and are known for their subtle natural results.

They work as a skin booster rather than a filler. Improve skin quality, including texture, hydration, and elasticity, resulting in reduced fine lines.  Unlike tear trough fillers, which can lead to overfilling or an unnatural puffy appearance, polynucleotides do not change the shape or contours in the area.

By enhancing the body’s natural collagen production, PN treatments deliver a subtle, gradual improvement that blends seamlessly with the surrounding skin. A range of Polynucleotide treatments are available, some of which are specifically for the eye area.

Nucleofill, Plinest, Plinest Eye, Plenhyage, PhilArt and PhilArt Eye are the most commonly used products in the UK.

They all contain Polynucleotides ( the building blocks of DNA).

All treatments involve multiple injections into the skin using a needle or cannula.

Side effects include bruising and swelling, which usually resolve within a few days.

The treatment stimulates fibroblasts to produce collagen and elastin, promotes hydration, and has an antioxidant effect.

Most treatments require three treatment sessions, two to three weeks apart.

To maintain results, you will need another single treatment every three months. (Frequency depends on your response to treatment.)

Polynucleotide treatments are performed by:

Sunekos

sunekos CheshireSunekos has been around since 2020.

Active ingredients:  Hyaluronic acid and Amino Acids.

It involves multiple injection points.

Sunekos stimulates the fibroblasts in the skin to produce collagen and elastin.

It is particularly effective in theperioculare area to reduce fine lines, dark circle,s and bags.

Most people require three or four treatments, 14 days apart.

You will require a maintenance treatment every 3-6 months to maintain results.

Sunekos is performed by:

Tear Trough Fillers

Tear Trough rejuvenation is a non-surgical aesthetic treatment using Dermal Fillers.

The Dermal Filler contains hyaluronic acid.

??The treatment involves a sequence of injections with a needle or a cannula. Injections are generally deep on the bone at the base of the tear trough to lift the soft tissue and skin under the eye area.

The recovery time is quick, but patients can expect mild swelling for a few days to a few weeks.
Mild bruising is common after filler treatment of the tear trough.

For best results, you may require two or possibly three gentle, subtle treatments to improve the area slowly. This will reduce the risk of a puffy, overfilled appearance commonly seen with tear trough fillers.

Tear trough fillers are a high-risk procedure, and many people are not suitable for this treatment.

A consultation with one of our medical team is important before considering this treatment. Find out more about tear trough fillers here.

This treatment is performed by:

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

PRP is a natural skin-rejuvenating treatment that uses platelets from your blood.

When activated, platelets release at least 7 growth factors that enhance natural healing processes.

The treatment involves multiple injections with a fine needle.

PRP can treat all the layers of the skin, superficial and deep.

The treatment works well under the eyes; it stimulates collageproductionth, improvee blood supply to the tissu,es and can greatly improve skin tone and texture. It also reduces fine lines and wrinkles.

Most people require three or four treatments, one month apart.

PRP is available with Dr Will Allen at Cheshire Lasers

If you are interested in booking an injectable under-eye treatments,we recommend you book an appointment with the appropriate specialist depending on your treatment(s) of interest.

You can book online with our doctors here or contact us on 01606 841255 to arrange an appointment.

Ultraformer III Jowl, Neck & Jawline Treatment

before and after ultraformer jowl treatment

Why does Cheshire Lasers use Ultraformer lll?

Ultraformer III is the latest non-surgical technology using High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) and Micro-Macro Focused Ultrasound (MMFU). It.It delivers safe, non-invasive face, neck, and body lifting treatments.
Ultraformer III is not only good for skin lifting and tightening; it also helps with lines, wrinkles, pores, skin tone, and laxity.

How does Ultraformer III work?

Ultraformer is a revolutionary skin-lifting and tightening treatment that uses gentle, safe, time-tested ultrasound energy at a micro-focused level to create powerful results.
The Ultraformer reduces the fatty deposits in the jowl and jawline area, which pull the face down. It also stimulates the growth of new collagen over time, strengthening and toning your skin from deep within and creating a lifting and tightening effect.

View the science of how Ultraformer works and how it differs from Radio-frequency here.

What parts of the body can the Ultraformer treat?

Ultraformer III results excel the most when treating the jowl, jawline and neck. At Cheshire Lasers, we highly recommend this Ultraformer for tightening up the jawline, to reduce sagging jowls and neck. It is especially effective in people who have heavy jowls.

It is also fantastic for treating wrinkles around the eyes and mouth this is discussed on a different page here.

The Ultraformer III can also be used to treat other areas of the body including the abdomen. The therapist can select various attachments to suit the skin in the treatment area.

How long does the Ultraformer Jowl treatment take?

Ultraformer has a fast shooting speed, which means a jowl or jawline treatment takes only 40 minutes. The upper neck and jowl area treated together can take about an hour.

How many Ultraformer treatments will I need?

One treatment is often enough for most people; however, you may require a second one for the best results.
A second treatment will usually be carried out around five months later.
The results can last up to a year and sometimes can last 18 months. Most people arrange another treatment when the results start to wear off.

When will I start to see the results of Ultraformer?

Some people can see results immediately after a jowl/jawline Ultraformer treatment.  This is due to heat stimulation during the treatment, which can make your skin look more rejuvenated, fresher, tighter and firmer.

The ultimate results develop 60 to 100 days after the treatment, when the collagen regeneration becomes noticeable. As collagen production can be ongoing, most patients will continue to see the effects of treatment improve sometime after the session.

Is Ultraformer treatment painful?

During the treatment, you will feel warm pulses of ultrasound energy deep under the skin, which causes the collagen and muscle layers to contract. Some people may find this uncomfortable, but others report no pain with the treatment at all. Some people will need to take some simple painkillers before the treatment; however, this depends on the pain sensitivity level of each individual, the area to be treated and the size of the area to be treated.

What is the recovery time for Ultraformer treatments?

You can go back to work and routine life immediately after the treatment.

Does Ultraformer have any side effects?

Heat levels created by the Ultraformer device are not damaging to the surrounding tissue, as it only targets the treated area. The energy is delivered to the deeper levels of the skin, and not to the upper layers. This means there should be no visible signs on the skin’s surface after the procedure.

The most frequently reported side effects are:

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Tingling of the skin
  • Tenderness
  • Bruising

The only other noticeable effects will be lifting and tightening.

There may be slight redness for up to an hour or so following the treatment.

A small percentage of patients may have slight swelling, tingling or tenderness to touch over the treated area, but these are mild and tend to last no more than a few days.

Bruising can occur and is usually minor but can be more severe, especially in people who are prone to bruising.

A small proportion of people may experience slight tingling or tenderness in the area treated for several weeks as the growth of new collagen occurs.

Is Ultraformer Safe?

Ultrasound technology has been used by medical professionals for scans, including pregnancy scans for over 50 years.

Ultraformer has been cleared by the Korean FDA after demonstrating safety in clinical studies. Tens of thousands of treatments have been performed worldwide without any significant adverse events.

Can I receive Botox and fillers in addition to Ultraformer Treatments?

Yes you can; however, we usually advise you have the Ultraformer treatment a month before you have any injectable treatments if they are in the same area.

In the past, Ultraformer treatments could not be carried out directly over fillers injected in the previous three months. It is now believed that it is safe to treat over fillers. However, we recommend a consultation with Dr Johnson first to make sure you are suitable. She can assess your face, what fillers you have had and where, and then decide on the best treatment plan for you.

You can have Botox on the same day if you are having the treatments in different areas. If the treatments are for the same area,  we normally recommend you leave a 2-week window between treatments.

Ultraformer Reviews:

The procedure was quick and painless with instant results. Immediately my skin was tighter and brighter. No downtime was needed whatsoever, I applied makeup and returned to work the next day. Friends and work colleagues all commented on how well and fresh I looked…this was only after a day or so after the treatment. Over the following months, the appearance of my skin kept improving and my cheek areas became more ‘plump’ and my forehead tighter. The results from the full face treatment for me lasted around 10-11 months. I would highly recommend the ultra former procedure. Carrie S.

After 12 years of trying to smooth out my jawline, I have at last received a treatment which is totally amazing. A facelift, threads and expensive treatments for jowls had not helped at all. At Cheshire Lasers I was treated with the ULTRAFORMER 3 HIFU Jawline treatment and immediately noticed a difference. After 3 months the results were even more obvious and still progressing. I am delighted with my profile and can highly recommend this procedure for a great confidence boost. Lynda M aged 63.

Ellansé

Ellansé logo and product packaging

What is Ellansé?

Ellansé is a Dermal Filler and a Collagen Stimulator. It is a unique, innovative, safe product for facial aesthetic treatments.

The Ellansé Range combines the benefits of both immediate correction of wrinkles and folds, as well as stimulating the production of the body’s own collagen, for natural, fresh and longer-lasting results.

Collagen is one of the important support structures in our skin. Collagen helps to maintain tightness, elasticity and suppleness in our skin. Over the course of time, our skin gradually loses its natural collagen, leading to facial laxity and the formation of wrinkles and folds. Ellansé uses the body’s natural response to stimulate the body’s own collagen (neocollagenesis) – restoring a fresh, more youthful appearance.

The Ellansé range of products addresses your needs for beautiful, fresh, longer-lasting and cost-effective results. Its four distinctive versions allow you to choose how long you would like the results to last, eliminating the need for frequent repeat treatments.

The ELLANSÉ Range is available in three versions:

  • ELLANSÉ-S (1 year)
  • ELLANSÉ-M (2 years)

Is Ellansé Safe?

ELLANSÉ is a Medical Device Class III8. It is CE approved (approved health and safety profile for use across the EU) since 2009. Ellansé has been used in the UK since 2010 and is distributed worldwide. It has high clinical safety data.

Reported Side Effects with Ellansé

Common, expected side effects are the same as other dermal fillers, including swelling, redness, and bruising. These side effects generally last maximum 1-2 days and are mild in nature.

What is Ellansé made from:

Ellansé contains PolyCaproLactone (PCL) microspheres suspended in a carrier gel. The carrier gel consists of Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) made from non-animal, human or bacterial sources.

PCL

PCL is a well-known totally bioresorbable soft medical material, used in numerous European (CE-marked) and US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved commercial bioresorbable medical device applications like e.g. biodegradable sutures and orthopaedic implants for several decades worldwide and has demonstrated an excellent safety profile.

CMC

CMC is used in numerous European (CE-marked) and US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved commercial product applications in medical, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, e.g. dermal fillers, oral and maxillofacial surgery for several decades worldwide and has demonstrated an excellent safety profile.

Ellansé is developed, manufactured and marketed by AQTIS Medical BV. AQTIS Medical BV is a privately-held company based in Utrecht, in the Netherlands.

Who performs Ellansé Treatment at Cheshire Lasers?

What is the aftercare after an Ellansé treatment?

Before your treatment, avoid using aspirin to reduce the risk of bruising.

To see the final result, it is important to wait until any of the injection-related symptoms have resolved.

You should contact us if you experience any side effects or have questions after treatment.

Avoid applying makeup to the treated area for 24 hours after treatment.

Avoid vigorous exercise, hot baths, and sun and heat exposure for three days after treatment.

How long does an Ellansé treatment take?

A typical Ellansé treatment takes approximately 30 minutes to an hour.  The treatment time depends on the number of treatment areas and the amount of product used.

How often will I need an Ellansé treatment?

Each Ellansé product has an estimated duration time, however, this can vary depending on the individual.

Results typically last around 1 year with Ellansé S or 2 years with Ellansé M.  However, for extensive restorative treatments we recommend a course of treatments.

Dr Johnson recommends initial treatment with Ellansé S and a review after 3-4 months. At this stage, collagen stimulation is present, and you can assess the results.  Depending on the results, you can then decide whether to have the S or the M for further top-up treatments to achieve the desired results.

Changes to some of the Kits

Please note the following kits no longer contain the trial size SPF and primer, due to ZO Skin Health now offering 4 different options of SPF for the face. This way we can recommend the SPF suited best to your skin type. The good news is the kits contain a slightly larger size cleanser and more complexion renewal pads and are at least £20 cheaper.

Milia Removal Treatments

What are Milia?

Milia are very common, pearly-white bumps, most commonly seen around the eyes and the upper cheeks. They are tiny cysts that contain keratin and sebum (lipid epithelial plugs or epidermal inclusion cysts). Milia are usually a dome-shape, 1-3mm in diameter, and sit just under the skin surface. They are often seen in clusters and can occur anywhere on the body.

Although milia are harmless and do not usually cause any problems or discomfort, some people do not like how they affect their cosmetic appearance.

Why do I get Milia?

There are two types of milia: primary and secondary.

Primary milia cysts contain keratin; they develop in the pilosebaceous follicle just under the skin. Primary milia are often seen on babies’ facial skin; people often call them milk spots. These milia nearly always go as the baby’s skin matures.

Milia seen in adults are less likely to go. Research suggests that milia in adults may be due to skin damage or using products containing mineral oil and lanolin. It suggests that milia arise because of a build-up of lanolin and mineral oil in the follicles.

Secondary milia occur due to skin trauma such as sunburn, radiotherapy or long-term steroid use.

How Can I Remove Milia?

Milia removal/treatment is not available on the NHS as they are a cosmetic problem. There are no prescription treatments currently available to help them.

Milia Removal with Topical Treatments

Occasionally, topical retinoids or alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) can improve some milia. At Cheshire Lasers, we recommend Neostrata Eye Cream for parents prone to milia under the eyes, and our pHformula recovery or synergy serums for other less sensitive facial areas.

Milia Treatment with a Sterile Needle

Skin specialists often remove milia with a sterile needle. For this procedure to work, you must remove the entire milia. This procedure usually leaves a small red mark /ulcer where the milia were, which often heals quickly.

Milia Removal with Hyfrecation

Hyfrecation is an excellent treatment for destroying and therefore completely removing the entire milia cyst. This involves a fine-tip needle delivering an electric current or radiofrequency energy into the lesion. At Cheshire Lasers, this is our treatment of choice for removing milia.
Dr Kathryn Hazlehurst usually removes them using advanced electrocautery.
These procedures usually leave a small red mark /ulcer where the milia were, which often heals quickly.

Milia Removal with Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is an alternative treatment method. It freezes the cyst, leaving a small blister that can take over a week to resolve.

Prevention of Milia

If you are prone to Milia, more will likely return over time. Using retinol products and AHAs that stimulate cell renewal and speed up skin turnover can reduce the risk of recurrence.

Also, avoid skin products that contain mineral oils and lanolin, as these increase the risk of recurrence.

Which areas can Cheshire Lasers treat?

Dr Kathryn Hazlehurst removes milia from the face, including the under-eye area. Although they’re unusual elsewhere, they can be easily removed from the body. We recommend you see your GP or a Dermatologist to ensure the skin lesion is diagnosed correctly before treatment.

Could treatment leave a scar?

It is very unusual to be left with a scar after the removal of Milia. A small red mark /ulcer usually develops after treatment of the milia and heals very quickly.

Prices for Milia Removal

Milia removal at Cheshire Lasers starts from £140 for one or two lesions, using advanced electrocautery with Dr Kathryn Hazlehurst. Additional lesions are £80 each, and a full-face treatment is £340.

Her consultation is £50, which is deducted from the price of your first treatment, and she can remove skin lesions during the consultation.

Send us a photograph first

If you are not sure which treatment you need, email photographs of the area from a couple of different angles to cheshirelasers@hotmail.co.uk. It’s helpful if you let us know how long the lesion has been there and whether it’s changing in any way. We will ask our specialists to review your email and advise our reception team on who you should see. Sometimes we will ask you to book a consultation first.

Complementary Therapies for Cancer Patients

complimentary holistic therapy for cancer care
Tara Shotton from Sole to Soul Therapies provides a range of holistic therapies at Cheshire Lasers Clinic, including therapies for cancer patients.

Tara has a special interest in complementary therapies, including Reiki and Reflexology, for cancer patients and has worked in this field.

Questions and answers for using complementary therapies for cancer patients:

How does using complementary therapies benefit cancer patients?

Diagnosis and subsequent treatment can bring on many emotions and symptoms including stress, mild to moderate depression, fear, worry and anxiety-induced nausea.

Tara’s experience has found that by combining a range of specific therapies, her patients feel a marked improvement in some of their symptoms and generally feel calmer.  She often uses a combination of therapies including Reiki and Reflexology as well as advising on relaxation techniques to use at home.

Tara also has experience in treating family members and carers, acknowledging the impact cancer has not just on the patient but the whole family.

Is there scientific research into using complementary therapies for cancer patients?

Reflexology cannot cure cancer. However, it may help with some of the side effects of chemotherapy, i.e. neuropathy, sickness, insomnia, pain etc. There is ongoing but limited research, however, some studies have looked at using Reflexology to help with symptoms such as pain, sickness and anxiety with evidence showing that patients relax which enables them to cope with stress and anxiety and can lift their mood. (cancerresearchuk.org)

The Christie Hospital runs specific courses in therapies for cancer care, recognising and promoting the benefits of complementary therapies, which Tara has attended.

Will the therapy interact with my medication?

A full medical consultation where a list of all medications is taken before your first therapy. Tara will then advise accordingly and offer a treatment plan which will be closely monitored and amended as required.

Are there any side effects of having complementary therapy with cancer?

Reflexology for cancer patients is very gentle, it is not as in-depth as a therapy would be on a person who does not have cancer, therefore most patients will feel more relaxed afterwards and some of the symptoms and side effects may also subside. As Tara will do a full initial medical consultation, followed by a short discussion before every subsequent treatment, she will be able to monitor and adjust her therapy accordingly. You will also be given aftercare advice at the end of your therapy.

How many treatments will I need?

This varies from patient to patient. Initially, a course of 4 to 6 treatments, approximately once a week.  Most people continue with treatment every 4-6 weeks for maintenance.

Is it common for cancer patients to use complementary therapies?

In the UK, up to one-third of people with cancer (33%) use complementary therapy at some time during their illness. For some types of cancer, such as breast cancer, this number is even higher at almost half (50%).

There is no evidence to suggest that any type of complementary therapy prevents or cures cancer. However, people are still using complementary therapies for many reasons.

People often have complementary therapies to help them feel better. The therapies can help them cope with the effects of the cancer and also the effects of the treatments. How you feel plays a part in how you cope.

Many complementary therapies concentrate on relaxation and reducing stress. They might help to calm your emotions, relieve anxiety, and increase your general sense of health and well being.

Many doctors, cancer nurses and researchers support the idea that positive emotions can improve your health.
